AI & Automation Intern

Job Description

Job Title: AI & Automation Intern
Department: Information Technology
Reports To: Vice President – IT & Strategy
Pay Type: Hourly

Summary:

We're looking for a hands-on AI & Automation Intern to build the tools that take repetitive, manual work off our team's plate.

Our department leaders will work with this role to identify the processes that need automating. Your job is to build the solutions: AI tools, bots, and automated workflows that save real hours across underwriting, claims, agent relations, and back-office operations. You'll work directly with the people who do the work today, turn their process into something that runs on its own, and measure the time it saves.

This is a builder role. If you like taking a messy, manual task and making it disappear, we want to hear from you.

Essential Functions

  • Build automated solutions for processes our team has identified, using AI tools, bots, low-code platforms, and scripts.
  • Meet with the employees and teams who perform each task to understand the steps, inputs, exceptions, and desired output before you build.
  • Design, test, and refine each solution with a small group of users before rolling it out more widely.
  • Use generative AI to draft, summarize, classify, extract, or route information where it fits, and build in checks so outputs stay accurate.
  • Connect the systems and files our team already uses, such as spreadsheets, email, shared drives, and internal applications.
  • Document every solution so staff can use it and others can maintain it after your internship ends.
  • Track the time saved and errors reduced by each automation and report results to leadership.
  • Handle policyholder, claims, and agency data securely and follow WMI's data privacy and compliance requirements in everything you build.

Specifications / Requirements

  • Strong Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, and pivot tables.
  • Ability to turn a described process into clear, logical steps and build a reliable solution from them.
  • Clear communicator who can work with non-technical staff, ask good questions, and explain how a solution works.
  • Self-directed and organized, able to manage several projects at once in a hybrid work setting.

Education / Experience

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Data Science, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience building automations or small applications, through coursework, personal projects, or prior work.
  • Experience with automation and scripting languages like Python & low-code tools.
  • Working experience with generative AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or Claude, including writing effective prompts and verifying outputs.
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft 365 environment, including SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, and Copilot.
  • Experience calling APIs or connecting AI models into a workflow.
  • Basic SQL or database experience.
  • Experience extracting data from PDFs, forms, or emails.
  • Understanding of data privacy practices for sensitive personal information.
  • Exposure to insurance or financial services. Not required; we'll teach you the business.
  • A portfolio, GitHub, or examples of automations or tools you've built is a nice to have.
